Tree Frog
Has anyone purchased a wool coat recently? My dd has asked for one for Christmas. I'd like to get her a nice one that doesn't break the bank, but the ones she's tried on don't fit through her shoulders. She has wide swimmer's shoulders, but is thinner through the torso and waist. If the coats fit her shoulders, the rest of her swims in the coat. Any suggestions? Links are appreciated!
bibiche
I would say either go with a belted style or have a tailor take it in.
Arcadia
How wide is her shoulders compared to her waist? I have narrow shoulders and have to go for styles from Reiss, Akris, Cole Haan. These styles would likely have a better fit for her
Starr
Have you looked at coats with drop shoulders? I see many when I google drop shoulder coat. Good luck!
Katy
Go to a nicer department store near you. The staff is trained to pin for their tailor. Let them know you’re looking for a budget wool coat. Find one that fits her in the shoulders. The alterations will likely be free or less than $20. It’s completely fine to say you’re looking for a budget item. Alternatively, take her measurements and look on a site like eBay or ThreadUp, or a designer vintage store near you. Designer items tend to fit taller/slimmer people better. You can find one of the brands listed above at a discount (especially if you order used but good condition). Then take it to a local tailor with good reviews. Alterations will likely be under $30, and they’ll have ideas to give it a custom & more flattering fit. I do NOT recommend buying more than one item at a time from The Real Real. They can’t handle large orders without mistakes IME. And if you order from eBay, filter so that you only see items located in the United States. That will save a shippings/customs disaster AND protect you from ordering something with a completely different sizing system than the US.
