chiguirre
If the dryer sheet doesn't work, I've had good luck with baby powder in a ziploc. I hate that smell, too, but sometimes its just the price you pay to get an oop at an affordable price. Good luck!
TammyinTN
I actully took a Yankee Candle car jar and put it in a ziploc with a stinky book and it worked wonderfully. I used the Home Sweet Home scent and I've actually bought them for my glassed in bookshelves and they keep our books smelling wonderful. TraceyS/FL
Newspaper and baking soda will absorb smells vs covering them up. UGH....

TraceyS/FL
LOL, i've never done it with books.... but those 2 items are what are normally suggested for getting smells out. Seal them up with them (1 or 2 - your choice). I'd be wanting something to try to absorb all the smell out vs covering it up you know? Tree House Academy
I bought some Harry Potter books over the summer from half.com and they were from a smoking home. UGH! We do not smoke and the smell was just overpowering! I put them in a zip loc with several dryer sheets (both on the outside and at random places between the pages) for 6 MONTHS. I can still smell the smoke. :(
hornblower
If you can find zeolite it will do the trick but it takes time. I have a couple sacks of zeolite crystals & I've also used the more sandy textured one. The crystals are less messy & less likely to damage a book than the sand. I'd vacuum the books thoroughly, then seal in a bag with a zeolite sack for several weeks/months. Putting them out in the summer sunlight will also help. Newsprint will absorb odors but most newsprint these days has ink which will rub off on your books & to do a good job you need to layer it between the pages.
