Amy from WT
I grew up with Nat Philbrick teaching me sailing off the coast of Cape Cod!! He now lives on Martha's Vineyard with his family - his wife, coincidentally, was also my swimming instructor :D . I've heard wonderful things about his books, but haven't had time to pick one up yet.

nrg
I am returning Mayflower to the library tonight. It was very well-written and engaging. I am going back for more!
dhudson
My son and I both read the YA version of Mayflower and got a lot out of it. We found it to be interesting and filled in some information for us. I thought it was worth the time and money.
gardenschooler
In the Heart of the Sea is one of my favorite books of all time. We got started on this by reading a YA version of it aloud, years ago, when we were studying the whaling industry. Definitely well-written and worthwhile. I'd even go so far as to say mesmerizing. I'm really intrigued by the fact that one of the crew has my maiden name, and my father's family was from this area...one day, I'll go digging and see if anything turns up. chiguirre
I enjoyed and learned a lot from Mayflower. It would be particularly good as a November book because of the topic.
sweetfeet
I read the Mayflower. I loved the first half of the book, however, the second half of the book was an absolute bore.

Janie
Many thanks, everyone. Shari, thank you for sharing about Desperate Crossing, one of my favorite presentations on that historical time period. I did not know that Philbrick was a commentator, nor that it was so closely tied to the book. Thanks! Amy in WT, how cool is that! Very neat. Thanks for sharing this! 2cents
Loved In the Heart of the Sea. It is the story of one of the only documented whale attacks at sea. It is thought that the book Moby Dick was based on this real story. Facinating read!
