Alexandra
Is it possible to add fats to the diet to help with dry skin? I was thinking that I am going to add some flax and ...well I don't know maybe avocado? Thanks for any thoughts on this!
OnTheBrink
I think adding some coconut oil helps with dry skin.
laughing lioness
It could also indicate a thyroid condition. Do you have other symptoms? Might be time for a thyroid check.
Mallorie
Sometimes dry skin can be an indicator of an allergy/intolerance. Maybe rather than/in addition to adding something to your diet, you need to cut something out. Coconut oil does work decently, but I had much better luck with olive oil after a shower. It soaks in better.
beansprouts
I take flax oil and cod liver oil, avoid hydrogenated oils and drink plenty of water. This has helped a great deal with my dry skin.
Kathy in MD
Fish oil helped me. It takes a while to kick in though.
LaxMom
Yes, also high-GLA oil supplements, like evening primrose or borage oil, can help, particularly if the dryness is leading to eczema. Cutting down on bathing (let's face it - you're probably not getting particularly sweaty or dirty this time of year) and using a salt or sugar scrub instead of soap can help, as well. I know here, in the Mid-Altlantic, we are experiencing what is essentially normal January weather already, and the dry heat is really wreaking havoc with my skin whereas I usually don't have an issue until the end of February, when it starts warming back up. My endocrine system is fine, the weather's just wonky. :tongue_smilie:
Peela
Yes, oils..but as Angela says, dont use soap. I haven't used soap for years, just water.
beansprouts
Yes, oils..but as Angela says, dont use soap. I haven't used soap for years, just water. I mostly rinse with warm water, though I occasionally use a very mild natural soap. I do not use detergent soaps or shampoo, though.
