KIN
My almost 7yo is a farmer at heart. He really enjoyed our herb garden this year, likes to water our indoor plants and had fun with our tomato plants. Is there something I could get him for his birthday (2 days before Christmas) or Christmas that would grow? An indoor herb garden? Other ideas? Where do I get such things? Thanks! KJB
Here's a link: http://www.nature-gifts.com/3208-venus-fly-traps.html It looks better in the picture than in real life, btw! But, it has grown and he loves it. It's interesting, too, since the plants are carnivorous and uncommon. Also, a few years ago, dd made a root view planter similar to this where she could watch carrots grow underground. It was really fun! https://www.ivillage.co.uk/parenting/school/articles/0,13843,186590_526093,00.html Edited November 28, 2008 by KJB
Kathy in MD
My almost 7yo is a farmer at heart. Many places, especially nurseries, carry spring bulbs that are already prepared (sent through a "winter" chill period). Avoid the paper whites because they stink indoors. You might also get a set up for him to start seedlings for transplanting in the spring. But I do like the previous poster's ideas more. Tree House Academy
If he likes to grow plants, would he also enjoy crystals? My kids LOVE the crystal kits. We also got them Triops (prehistoric fish) and they hatched and grew as well. Just a thought if you run out of plant ideas.
specialmama
Vegiforms would be cool, as he could mould veggies into cool face shapes. http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=2&p=51543&cat=2,2200 You could find a top quality gardening store, similar to Lee Valley above, and find some neat books on gardening, reprinted from the 1800's. What about a mini greenhouse, or Wardian Case? http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=2&p=48554&cat=2,50560&ap=3 A real bonzai tree would likely be a hit, as he could prune it and sculpt it through the years. Paired with a great book about bonzai art, I'm sure he'd find it inspiring.
mcconnellboys
He can force bulbs, like paperwhite. They're widely available at this time of year! A Rosemary tree would be fun and nice for the kitchen, too!
PamJH
I think that's what it's called. Its a sort of skinny plastic box that you put seeds in a watch them grow. I know you could do almost the same thing with a clear glass jar, but the slimness of the box allows you to see the plant's growth on all sides. A lot of people put carrots seeds in them. If I can find a link I'll post it.

Rosie_0801
How about a kid's herbalism book so he can grow and make his own remedies. Just simple stuff like growing aloe vera for sunburn, making chamomile tea. Can't do any harm with things like that. :) Rosie
Caroline
My sister and I had a terrarium when we were growing up. I saw some in the Smith and Hawken catalog, but you could probably find them elsewhere at a better price. I am thinking of getting one for our family.
