MercyA
My daughter thought he was super cute. She called him a Kawaii bug. 🙂 I don't know about cute...but he is cool. Anyone know what he is? Edited July 25, 2019 by MercyA

Farrar
It looks similar to the cicadas I know, but the wings are so much shinier! But there are lots of varieties of cicadas.
MercyA
You two called it! Apparently he was a newly emerged cicada. That is how they look before their exoskeleton hardens: http://bugoftheweek.com/blog/2015/8/31/dog-days-and-their-cicadas-ineotibiceni-formerly-itibiceni-species
mmasc
Great picture! The wings look like they’re glowing. So pretty!
klmama
It's the loveliest time in a cicada's life. A bit before this photo was taken, his wings were just little lumpy things and his body was huge. The fluids shift into the wings, the exoskeleton hardens, and the wings darken. We got the whole process on videotape when my oldest was little, as a cicada very graciously climbed a few feet up our clothesline pole to molt.
