Using old iPhone as ipod

So... is this a good idea? 

I want to let my oldest have my old phone to use for music, but we don’t need it to have cell service. Also, she doesn’t need it for internet browsing. Could she still connect to her Apple Music playlist? 

You can tell I have no clue. 😊

Many people do this with old phones. It is a very good idea.

She could use it to download songs onto the device and/or she could stream music when on WiFi.

My oldest has an old iPhone that she uses as music and camera device. She also uses it to text her best friend or play apps (when wifi is available). But you could totally just use it for music.

Sure. DS uses our ancient phone just for music when he runs because it fits better in the hip pocket of his running shorts than his newer (larger) phone does.

In case you are concerned, she will have Internet access when she has Wifi available.

Absolutely!   My old iPhone 5 sits on my nightstand.  No SIM card installed.  I use it for an alarm clock and to listen to my audio books at night.  If I turn on the WiFi, I can listen to my Pandora stations.  It makes a GREAT bedside device.
