LauraBeth475
I’m looking to dig into some mom reading this year while the girls are studying these topics. Any favorites? I was a science major in college, so I’m good with meatier suggestions there.
Familia
Daniel Boorstin The Discoverers: A History of Man's Search to Know His World and Himself. This book is exceptionally written and fascinating. It covers history, science, civics, etc, all interwoven. A book I re-read frequently for just browsing. One Amazon reviewer said it well, "A liberal arts education in one book".
Chris in VA
SWB's, of course, and I really enjoyed a fiction book called Sarem, about the area around Stonehenge. Please no one mention Clan of the Cave Bear. Please. ?
LauraBeth475
I read the Clan of the Cave Bear years ago. Not feeling the need for a repeat. ?
LauraBeth475
I’ve put The Gene and A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived on the list. Anyone like SPQR by Mary Beard?
extendedforecast
I read An Edible History of Humanity when my daughter was assigned it last year in her World History AP class. I really enjoyed it. I learned so much - from the early cultivation of grains to how wars were impacted by armies manipulating the food supply. katilac
My two favorite history texts are SWB's History of the Ancient World and Humanistic Traditions. HoAW has audio, which is fabulous if you do any driving around. For historical fiction, I loved The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. It was one of the most amazing and compelling novels I have read in a long time. We all cried. katilac
Gloria Fiero, and I always say the name slightly wrong, it's The Humanistic Tradition. You can usually find older editions used. I like the individual volumes, the combined ones are a bit bulky.
