Emba
Yesterday I saw a reference in a thread to Reasoning and Reading, and after looking at it, it seems like something that my DD could benefit from, but I'm having trouble finding much information on it. Has anyone here used it? What did you think? My impression is that it is a supplement, not a complete program. About how long does it take to complete a level? cintinative
yes! We have used Beginning, the Level 1, and now my oldest is in Level 2. It's definitely a supplement. I think CAP suggests two years per level, and that is what we have been doing. For us that is two pages per week during our core school year (Aug-May). It's what it sounds like--review of reading related concepts like finding the main idea of a paragraph, putting things in sequence, finding cause-effect, etc. Also it has some logic related concepts like syllogisms, analogies, etc. There is a sample on CAP's website for each. This is for Level 1: https://classicalacademicpress.com/product/reasoning-reading-level-one/ There is a key for each level. I have the key for the beginning one if you want it.
sangtarah
We have used Beginning and Level 1. I think it was a great addition to our studies. Good exercises, easy to fit in, covers a lot of topics we hadn’t gotten too. I tried BJU’s Reading series, but it had too many parts and was never implemented the “right” way. Reasoning and Reading filled the need! 1
Emba
Thanks, both of you. So do you find that the beginning level is necessary, or would you start with Level 1 for a 6th/7th grader? We used BJU reading too, and while I thought it was a great program, it was too labor intensive and we didn't make the kind of progress i wanted. I'm thinking of using CLE next year for our main program because it is a one semester program and will leave plenty of time for all of the other reading (novels) i hope to do that the in with other subjects, as well as supplements for DD's specific weaknesses. They really cover the same topics at increasing difficulty. 1
Emba
What you are calling book 1 - is that the "beginning" or " level 1" book? Sorry if I'm being dense.
sangtarah
Yes, Level 1 for 6/7 grade. It was just right for us. My 3rd grader used Beginning this year. It was a stretch for her, but a good one.

Not you - their ordering is confusing! 1
cintinative
Yes, there are three levels: Beginning, Level 1 and Level 2. I would start with Level 1 as others have recommended.
SoCal_Bear
I have Beginning for my boy. It's good review for him. I would agree go with Level 1. Beginning would be far too easy for a 6th grader.
ByGrace3
We use Reasoning and Reading. My dd completed all 3 levels and ds is in Level 2. We love the program.
