Celiac testing / Low IgA

Hi! (This is Runningmom80, they are working on my screen name)

I have a long history of gastric issues, and im currently having a flare. In researching IBS, I came across the symptoms for celiac and have a few, so i asked for the celiac blood panel to at least rule it out. (My oldest has food allergies and EoE, so it's in the realm of possible I carry some sort of auto immunity or food intolerance)

Anyways, my Transglutaminase IgA came back at 2 as did my Gliadin which are both way far off of the 30 needed to be positive. I was happy with that until I saw that my serum IgA was low, 48 and the lab has normal at 78-325.

upon google diagnosis, it seems that the low IgA renders the other two tests useless because I’m not producing enough IgA antibodies anyways.

im just curious if anyone knows anything about celiac blood testing or low IgA. I read that people with low IgA can have a higher instance if gluten sensitivity as well.

i know I need a dr to help me, and I have an appt with a GI in May, I just thought I’d see if anyone had a similar experience.

Yes......went through this.  If the IgA is deficient then you need a different test as you will not test accurately on the standard blood test.  But what was the gliadin test?  I don't think they typically run DGP right off the bat.

From the Celiac foundation:

If you are IgA deficient, your doctor can order a DGP or tTG-IgG test

Thank you! I’m hoping my dr catches this.

I would ask anyway. My daughter just got a blood panel and someone there actually misread the results (hard to believe! A simple google check worked for me) and they told my my daughter's blood test indicated Celiac. So referral to pediatric GI specialist, long drive to Richmond, and lo and behold she is fine- she tested near the high end of the range while low does indicate Celiac.

Long story short, I would call and ask for a referral to get further information from a GI.

My user name is also messed up.

I just experienced similar things with a celiac blood test. I initially tested slightly higher than normal. I went ahead with an endoscopy. The gastro specialist took a biopsy and the result was completely negative for celiac. I don't know all the details, but from this it seems to me that the biopsy is more accurate than the blood test. For the month prior to the endoscopy, I had to eat the equivalent of 3 slices of bread daily.

All the best with your diagnosis.

Thank you! I've made sure to keep eating gluten in case the GI would like to perform a biopsy.

I asked my PCP about testing IgG instead and she said since my CBC was normal in February that I should just retest IgA again in a couple of months.  It makes zero sense to me but I also didn't go to medical school so who knows.
