Hunter
I found a new to me science book. https://www.amazon.com/Everything-You-Need-Science-Notebook/dp/0761160957 https://books.google.com/books?id=Y1wbDAAAQBAJ&pg=PA253&lpg=PA253&dq=everything+you+need+to+ace+science+acid&source=bl&ots=rvx2S95lXO&sig=VdAwkALLz3fWc5OEwT7XK0WoWg4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwigwrzNnZXRAhVk4IMKHS6pCfwQ6AEIIDAB#v=onepage&q=everything%20you%20need%20to%20ace%20science%20acid&f=false I like this book a lot. I just got a copy from the library so I could take a long hard look at it. It does not have an index. I cannot seem to find and entry for acids and bases, with is odd, since there is not a single other topic not included that I would want to cover for basic science. But I really really like this book as a first impression. It takes me a year or two to give my final reviews on a book, but at first look, I'm impressed. The rest of the series looks good, but doesn't nail what *I* want to cover with a student. I keep hoping I'm just missing the acid and base pages. :confused1:
Guest
One of the big homeschooling blogs recent had a long glowing review of this whole series. I immediately thought of your old minimalist threads! Which we need another of soon, btw. I think it was passionate curiously, let me see... Guest
I can't find the blog I was talking about but I did start a minimalist challenge thread. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/633152-minimalist-homeschool-ya-got-one-box/
PollyOR
The ONE I haven't bought yet. ^_^ With Christmas and being sick I haven't had the time to thoroughly look through them yet.
Hunter
I'm realizing that this book is so good, that I wouldn't need several other resources I have been dependent on. Quite a bit of geography is covered.
Arcadia
They have the entire series at Barnes and Noble :) ETA: Does your library has the old edition of Usborne illustrated dictionaries. We like those and we bought the biology one from the used books store, Chemistry https://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Illustrated-Dictionary-Chemistry-dictionaries/dp/0860208214 Physics https://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Illustrated-Dictionary-Physics-dictionaries/dp/0860209873 Biology https://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Dictionary-Biology-Usborne-Dictionaries/dp/0746037929 Edited December 28, 2016 by Arcadia
PollyOR
We have two independent bookstores in town (new and new/used). Both stores sell this series. It must be quite popular. Honestly, I still miss Borders. Barnes and Noble is just too far of a drive (at least an hour).
SarahW
Wow, that looks a LOT like many British Revision books. Not that that's a bad thing, I picked up stacks of old editions of those things when we lived in England. But it's kinda funny.
Hunter
My Barnes and Noble didn't have the Science or Math which were the ones I wanted to see most. I really miss Borders too. I never heard of the series until I saw the English book at Barnes and Noble. They had the history books, and look decent, but...hiSTORY is just a bunch of STORIES to me, and when I discuss THAT topic it is a thread of its own. The English book just covered too many topics I don't teach, and I'm set in my ways, right or wrong, of what I do want to focus on. The usborne Science books are really good, and I owned them in the past. They frustrated me as they didn't have the earth sciences and I never found just the right supplement to acompany the other books that were so well done. And then it went OOP, I ditched it. This science book nails it for me, though. I have it at the top of my wishlist. I want to read the library copy for a couple weeks before I hit buy. I really don't like to hoard books anymore. I need to date awhile, before I tie the knot and get monotonous, in case I get an unexpected surprise.
PollyOR
Hunter, I found the last copy of the science book and bought it today. :) DK has a set of books you might also find interesting: "Help Your Kids With ________" Math, Language Arts, Science, Music, Computer Coding, Study Skills Edited December 28, 2016 by PollyOR
Hunter
Hunter, I found the last copy of the science book and bought it today. :) DK has a set of books you might also find interesting: "Help Your Kids With ________" Math, Language Arts, Science, Music, Computer Coding, Study Skills I do like this set. I have the language arts on Kindle, and I had a hardcopy of the Science before it became a cockroach nest and got rid of it. I think that science was lean on the earth sciences too, but I'm not sure. It was not as well rounded at the Big Fat Notebook. It is a nice book though. I went to B&N today to look at the English and history books again. Nope, they are just not what I want to cover. But I am getting to be a weird old lady, so... The World History is good, and exactly what most people would hope for, I'd think.
mlktwins
Thanks for posting this. I ordered them all from my library to take a look. I picked up the science and math today :-). I'm probably only interested in the science and world history, but wanted to look at them all before I decided!
