Creating a Middle School Transcript

When we meet with the registrar at our local high school to sign up for part-time enrollment for our two classes, we will need to provide a middle school transcript.

 

I was wondering if anyone has a link to a template for creating such a transcript? I found plenty for high school and will modify one of those if I have to, but I am definitely not a Word expert. It would be ideal if there is one out there for the three years of middle school that already looks decent. Once I start hacking off the 4th section on some of these high school ones, things look wonky.

Speaking from ignorance but...

 

"Transcript" usually identifies with credit hours, courses and GPA for High School students. I wonder if what they are really asking from you is a list of courses and their descriptions, any test results or activities your Middle School student has completed?

 

If that's the case, then you would want to have a write-up for each course (Language Arts, Math, etc), resources used, methods of evaluation, learning goals, and learning activities used to accomplish those goals. An example might be:

 

Course:

Novel Writing

 

Description:

In this course, the student will learn how to design a plot, develop characters, create realistic dialogue, and write descriptive prose. First Semester is spent...Second Semester is spent... (edited for expediency)

 

Objectives:

The student will improve skills in the use of creativity, dialogue, plot and character development, vocabulary, and the mechanics of writing....

 

Activities:

Class attendance and participation, participation in the NaNoWriMo project (story concept, writing goals, novel writing, editing), participation in the publication process (cover art, formatting, layout, "extra" pages such as author's biography), book release event

 

Resources, Books, & Other Materials:

NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program, Chris Baty, Office of Letters and Light

Novel Writing Class, ________, Instructor at ________

 

Methods of Evaluation:

The student will be evaluated based on participation, attitude and improved creative writing skills.

 

In addition, I would think they would want to see a portfolio of completed work.

 

But, like I said, I have no experience in dealing with the traditional schools (where my student is concerned) so I really don't know. If I were you, I'd call the school office and ask for details and/or resources to help you comply with the request.

It's typical for high schools to want to see the middle school transcript.  Schools keep transcripts of grades for all students starting in kindergarten. 

 

Choose the high school transcript you like best.  Delete the 12th grade column.  Highlight the three columns for 9th, 10th and 11th, and then go to the toolbar at the top of the document where it says "layout" or "table layout." Click "distribute columns."  That should make them look about right.  If not, use your back arrow, and try again on just the parts you want to be identical.  Change all the info, as needed. If there is too much space between the columns and whatever was to the right of them, you can pull the edge over and then click "distribute columns" again. 

 

WTA:  I tried this on a different sample transcript I had, and it didn't work.  To get the same effect, I had to merge cells.  What worked best was to merge the title of the course cell with the following 9th grade cells for that course.  The "merge cells" button is also under "layout" or "table layout."

If you don't mind spending the money and plan to continue homeschooling, consider buying a subscription to My Homeschool Transcripts.  We can create transcripts for as many students as we want, unlimited times.  I've already used it many times as the kids have applied to camps, jobs, and different schools.  You can enter in course descriptions, extracurriculars and test scores which makes it useful to record keeping too.  I like not having to worry about formatting, just enter in the data and it spits out your pdf.

I have used Transcript Maker https://www.transcriptmaker.com/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email which offers a 14 day trial (w/o printing) so you can see if you like it. You can list classes by numerical grade instead of "freshman" etc which would work for middle school.

 

I like that I can choose to sort by subject instead of year.

 

I do not like that I cannot choose my own weighting---but that's high-school specific :)
