TranquilMind Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 (edited) So, if one is not turning 18 until June, but the current 5 year child passport expires in April, what do you do if a trip is scheduled before the 18th birthday but after the expiration date of the child passport? At 17, can you renew and get an Adult passport that is good for 10 years? Or do you have to get the child passport if you happen to be under 18, and then get an Adult passport at 18 that is good for 10 years? If you let it lapse, is it not a bigger hassle to renew? SparklyUnicorn Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Yes the child could get an adult passport. We let ours lapse before, and it was not a bigger hassle. I can't say for sure if that is always the case, but we got our passports very quickly (this was a couple of months ago in fact). Quote
Jaybee Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 (edited) The age for a 10-year adult passport is 16. It is good for 10 years, and ages 18 or 21 do not affect the 10-year limit. https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/16-and-17.html ETA: Many people do not realize that when traveling overseas, many countries will not allow entry/reentry if the passport has less than 6 months before expiration. Make sure you pay attention to that, because the "expiration" date is really before the one on the passport for some countries. Edited April 21, 2016 by Jaybee 7 Quote
diplomum Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Just ditto-ing Jaybee. Adult (10 year) passports are issued for 16 and over. At this age they sign their own application etc. 2 Quote

gardenmom5 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) we are in process of renewing dudeling's passport. he's ecstatic because he's now 5'. (the all important front seat in the car. . . . not there yet kid.) adult passports that are good for 10 years start at 16. eta: it is common to renew passports before expiration. the current processing time is 4 - 6 weeks. you can pay extra to expedite it to three weeks. and if you need it even faster -you can go to a federal courthouse. check the website. if he will need it this summer . . . GET IT NOW. dudeling's passport is expired - they just handed it back because all the required info is already in the state dept's database. (if it hadn't expired, they'd have sent it on to state with the renewal application.) renewal and first passports are different. Edited April 26, 2016 by gardenmom5 Quote
J-rap Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I see others have posted this, but I believe the "adult" age for passports starts at 16. Should be no problem! Quote
