My3Munchkins
I've been having lower back issues and my chiropractor has recommended that I stay away from soft chairs and couches. This means no snuggling on the couch with my kiddos for read alouds for now. He did say that if I absolutely have to sit on the couch (which of course I do!) to make sure it is a firm couch. We were planning to replace the couch in our living room/schoolroom/playroom anyway but now need to take extra care to make sure it is firm. Any recommendations? Baseball mom
No recommendations but if your couch has removable cushions you can put a piece of wood under the cushions. That will help firm it up some. At least not sink as far. That may help some.
klmama
Just FYI, buying a firmer couch may cost more, but it may be worth it for your back. You might check to see if Flexsteel couches are available in your area. If not at the furniture stores, possibly at Macy's or Pottery Barn. We've had one for almost 20 years, and it's still very firm. If it weren't for the dated style and fabric, you'd think it was only a couple of years old. We have another couch from a different manufacturer that is only about 5 years old, but after the first year it had more give than the Flexsteel.
Starr
Sitting isn't great for lower back pain. Could you all gather on a bed and read with your head propped up but back flat? Or on the living room floor?
Ali in OR
I was also going to suggest Flexsteel. Ours feels firm to me--it's about 4 years old I think. You can also use a lumbar roll/pillow or even a rolled towel to help keep the natural curve in your back while you sit.
Lawana
I often use this lumbar support. http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Posture-Lumbar-Back-Support/dp/B00LGCWXCO/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1460636598&sr=8-2&keywords=lumbar+mesh You can find it cheaper elsewhere, usually about $10. It is easily moved from chair to chair and also to your car. It has made sitting a lot more comfortable for my back.
momee
We got a Pottery Barn comfort roll I think it's called. REALLY wish we hadn't gotten a sectional, but love it otherwise.
Suzanne115
My husband's parents have an Ethan Allen couch that is very firm. I'm sure it was expensive, but they have had it for several years and it still looks and feels new. Suzanne
