Esse Quam Videri Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 They'll be driving together for 3 full days. Son is 10 and a nonfiction lover. Unfortunately, he's always hated whimsical type fantasy or anything that seems entirely unrealistic. We recently listened to Where the Red Fern Grows and he LOVED it. I'm thinking he's ready for Hatchet, and I'm considering Call of the Wild and God's Smuggler. Any other suggestions? Quote
Rachel Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 The Incredible Journey is really good. My 8 year old loved reading Hatchet, our librarian recommended it after she listened to the audiobook. The Trumpet of the Swan, especially if you have the version read By EB White is good too. Quote
purduemeche Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Johnny Tremain Henry Huggins audio collection Star Wars The Jungle Book Eagle of the Ninth Wanderings of Odysseus Black Ships before Troy (can you tell we are Sutcliffe fans?) Quote
Monica_in_Switzerland Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 The audio of By the Great Horn Spoon is wonderful. Yearling, Shiloh, sign of the Beaver, Big Ben... Not sure which of these are on audio, but they are similar in feel to Where the Red Fern Grows. Quote
sweetpea3829 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Does he reject talking animal-type stories? If not...he may enjoy Guardians of Ga'Hoole. Quote
sweetpea3829 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 My Side of the Mountain would probably appeal to him, if he enjoyed Where the Red Fern Grows. Also...Woods Runner is another good historical fiction piece. Johnny Tremain was mentioned above...it's a bit dry, but if he enjoys non-fiction, he may enjoy this historical fiction piece. Quote
