bluebonnetgirl
Going to be taking a break from general science and want to pursue more applied life skills science in the area of health, nutrition, and first aid. This is for a teen boy on the autism spectrum. Need lots of visuals, and comprehension level maybe around 4th. Online or computer based would be even better. So far, looking at Behold and See Science 4 by CHC. Any other recommendations? Thank you! Edited February 25, 2016 by bluebonnetgirl

kbutton
I know some people who have liked this book (they did not use it in its entirety): http://www.amazon.com/Taking-Care-Myself-Personal-Curriculum/dp/1885477945 I think one of the selling points for them was that the book has some sequences for personal hygiene tasks. lauranc
Have you checked out any 4H curriculum? They've got some decent (and, I think, useful, stuff). Here's a link: http://www.4-h.org/resource-library/curriculum/healthy-living-curriculum/ We've done some of their animal care curriculum, and my daughter (16 with autism and mild ID) really enjoyed it. --Laura
bluebonnetgirl
Laura, These look interesting, but are there samples to see inside? ETA: never mind, I see samples on a few - off to look closer! Edited March 26, 2016 by bluebonnetgirl
Timberly
I am hoping to have kids watch Red Cross self paced video courses this summer. Red Cross offers lots of of different online classes but I don't know which grade levels they are appropriate for http://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/course-dowbt000000000010278 Edited March 27, 2016 by Timberly
Timberly
I hope this link works. I filtered the Red Cross classes to include only online options. http://www.redcross.org/courses/index.jsp
imagine.more
I'm trying to diy the same sort of thing for my DD. I'm finding that a mix of Teachers Pay Teachers resources, particularly those targeted at ESL or Special Needs are useful....picture-based but not too babyish. lauranc
I'm going to do a year of culinary arts with my 16 yr old DD (autism/ mild ID). The intent is to combine cooking skills, nutrition/health, and math. Looking at using this possibly http://web.extension.illinois.edu/state4h/projects/new/-- as well as: http://www.jamieshomecookingskills.com/skills.php http://www.sdlback.com/consumer-spending-handbook/ This, along with the student worktext. Also: http://www.tasksgalore.com/html/book2_sample.html and, there is a youtube channel called: Sarah's Great Day https://www.youtube.com/user/sarahsgreatday Cooking 'show' featuring a girl with Down Syndrome (and her mom) I think my daughter might kind of like watching these videos and trying the recipes. Still searching to make it complete-- but this is what I have so far. -Laura
Hilltopmom
Both Remedia & AGS sell life skills health curriculums written at a lower level (grade 2-4 reading level typically) for special needs middle & high school students. Not babyish. Text or workbook based though, not online.
Timberly
My dyslexic is using MUS Fractions, MUS Decimals, Khan, Dr Loyd's Fraction Overlays, and a private tutor. After checking out Good Eats DVDs from the library over and over I bought him all of the Amazon streaming Good Eats seasons and the three Good Eats cookbooks that include recipes for all of the seasons - expensive but he loves it. Maybe I can convince DD to exercise too ;)
