Dmmetler
We took a train to Chicago and back for Thanksgiving. Last night at dinner, Amtrak paired us with an Aquatic Ecologist with the Illinois Natural History survey. She and DD spent a happy evening discussing chytrid fungus and xenopus frogs, which overlapped both of their research :) It's just kind of neat when it comes together that way. We'll probably never see this person again, but it was cool!

chocolate-chip chooky
I was just chatting with my daughter (9) about how great it is when an adult treats her as a ... real person with real thoughts. So many adults talk down to children or don't even seem to notice them. When an adult holds a real conversation with her, it is a treat. Our vet is great like that. She includes my daughter in the conversations and answers her questions without condescension or simplification. I've got her in my sights as a mentor... Your experience sounds lovely!
RootAnn
Last night at dinner, Amtrak paired us with an Aquatic Ecologist with the Illinois Natural History survey. That is seriously awesome. :w00t: How'd they know to do that?
Dmmetler
Just luck-if you do a sleeper car, meals are included, and during your time slot, they fill up the tables. Since there were 3 of us, they directed the next single person who came in to our table-who turned out to be the ecologist. We've met some interesting folks that way, both on trains and on cruise ships (which do the same thing), but this was a particularly nice fit. daijobu
That is seriously awesome. :w00t: How'd they know to do that? There's a special form for Amtrak VIPs like dmmetler's dd. Kind of like eHarmony for aspiring scientists. Okay, now I'm really procrastinating.
