workingmom
So DS 11 and 13 learned to knit a few years ago. But its painfully slow. They just saw a video about arm knitting and want to try it. I'm all in favor for exposing them to new art forms and creative stuff. But seems like you can only arm knit cowls and blankets. I don't think boys/men wear cowls right. Any good patterns for boys to make useful projects for themselves with this. I personally don't like the really loose arm knitting just looks like layers of yarn wrapped around your neck. But maybe a tighter scarf would look cool. I can't find anything specific for boys projects with arm knitting. Suggestions?
AndyJoy
I found a couple scarves that aren't cowls or infinity scarves. Here's one: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/L40028B.html I'm intrigued so I'll Google some more ideas and see if I can find anything! catz
Another idea is looming? You can get the circular looms and I just got a giant scarf loom for super bulky yarn. You can make a hat on a loom in a couple hours. My son was introduced to them in preschool. I had great luck with that in a class I'm teaching with kids as a first project.
Cinder
You can arm knit a scarf--it's just the cowl that hasn't had its ends seamed together.
Cinder
Are you on Ravelry? I found a couple non-cowl projects: market bag, pillow (this pattern is in a book, not online), and blanket. Yeah, the majority of the patterns I saw were giant cowls of different colors. ETA: the book I mentioned above has some interesting patterns for arm and finger knitting
workingmom
Yeah I guess the giant scarf is the only option. Would be cool if you could do hats or something Modelled with boys/men.
Cinder
Perhaps they should learn to crochet. It's generally faster than knitting and there are soooo many patterns to choose from.
Suzanne in ABQ
Have they seen Paracord? I know a boy their age who is very much into all he can make with paracord. Paracord (parachute cord) comes in a slew of colors, some very "manly," like camouflage. They can use macrame type knots to make keychains and belts and stuff like that. They could probably arm knit a bag of some type. Google "paracord images" and you'll see a zillion ideas.
