Southern Ivy
If you are storing your school books for later use, do not store them in cardboard boxes and put them in your basement. I'm currently inventorying over 100 books that were ruined when our basement flooded. What a pain!
Guest
I'm sorry :(. You have to be careful with sheds, too. Even when they seem dry the books can still gain quite a bit of mold.
Spryte
Ouch. Adding garages to the list of places that aren't the best for storing books.
redsquirrel
I am so sorry! I live in fear of this. I do keep them in the basement, but I store all our school books, science materials etc in big plastic bins right next to the dehumidifier. I have four, one for each year of the history cycle. I am really sorry. I would be freaking out

StephanieZ
Rubbermaid totes are books' best friends. So is keeping all boxes a few inches off the floor. So sorry!!
Zydruna
DH would feel your pain! He had a big box of books he was saving and our severely diabetic cat peed on the box and ruined them all. :ack2:

WestHoustonMom
Ouch. Adding garages to the list of places that aren't the best for storing books. Yep, I can attest to this. All the books I've been saving since childhood spent a few years in the garage and became a feast for silverfish.
Lara in Colo
One thing you can do is store everything on pallets-- they are cheap and most basement flooding doesn't get up to 4-5 inches. You can even cut them in half so they don't take up so much room
