MeganW
A kid that LOVED and was so inspired by the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio would also love ____________________. This is for an 11 / 12 year old - my niece who loves to get "real books" from Aunt Megan because I am the only person who doesn't buy her twaddle or yet-another video game! :)
Acorn
I just had the same thought. I didn't really find an answer, but am going to buy Green Glass House and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's library. These aren't the same genre, but I think my 9 year old will like them too. Farrar
Well, I think of other "overcoming issues" type books so... Because of Mr. Tearpt Rules Out of My Mind Counting by 7's Mockingbird The Thing About Georgie Or you could just go with touching quality contemporary fiction, so some other thoughts... A Mango Shaped Space Absolutely Normal Chaos Stargirl Or something a little different like... Savvy (contemporary fantasy, finding your way and place sort of book) One Crazy Summer (historical fiction) Kira-Kira (historical fiction)
Chrysalis Academy
Shannon recommends Out of My Mind and Mockingbird - both on Farrar's list!
deerforest
My DD loved everything on Farrar's list, and she loved Wonder. She also said that Half a Chance was "life changing" and a beautiful story.

She also said that Half a Chance was "life changing" and a beautiful story. Oh, that's nice to know. I didn't love Touch Blue (Lord's second book) so I didn't pick up Half a Chance. But Rules was so good. And my boys liked it so much as well.

I guess we will definitely skip it though!

Yeah, it wasn't bad, so if she tears through books, it's probably worth reading. It just didn't have whatever magic Rules had, at least for me. oneddmanybooks
"Out of My Mind" is an absolutely amazing book. I'm looking forward to trying some of the others mentioned above. I'll try to think of some ideas and come back later.
Cosmos
This isn't really similar to Wonder in any way, but a fantastic book for an 11/12 girl is The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Another is The View from Saturday. Like Out of My Mind mentioned above, this is about a quiz team, which is what made me think of it. BatmansWife
This isn't really similar to Wonder in any way, but a fantastic book for an 11/12 girl is The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. This book looks really good...thank you for mentioning it. I'm also on the lookout for some good books for my 11 year old daughter. I don't want anything too dark, and I certainly don't want anything with girl/boy crushes in it. I haven't heard of a single one of the books mentioned in this thread. Sometimes I wonder where I've been....hiding behind a rock or something (or maybe in a cave  ). If anyone else has more suggestions...please share.

kwg
My ds got this book so many times from the library I finally just bought it for him. He loves it! Which is funny because he is totally a Dungeons and Dragons, Neal Asher- sci fi/fantasy kinda guy. I will have to look at some of these, esp the ones that pp said her boys liked as well. If anyone else has more suggestions...please share. Some of the books on my list do have girl/boy crushes, but mostly in a very innocent way - such as in Rules, where the girl befriends a handicapped boy with limited speech and takes him to a dance to show she's not embarrassed by being friends with him or Mango-Shaped Space where she befriends a boy who has the same condition as her and its implied that they have a little romance budding, but it's not the focus of the story and nothing really happens but them talking. But maybe avoid Absolutely Normal Chaos where it's a much bigger part of the plot and there's kissing. In general, Wendy Mass is a good 11 yo girl author for decent light reading. Very little romance - her birthdays series is very cute. Sharon Creech is another one, though there often are some mild romance themes in her books, but look at Walk Two Moons instead of Absolutely Normal Chaos. Deborah Wiles could be another good author. Look at historical fiction - I strongly second Calpurnia Tate, which is amazing. But also recent historical fiction like One Crazy Summer, Lions of Little Rock, Moon Over Manifest, Turtle in Paradise...

Other absolutely top picks from my dd who just stopped being 11 - anything at all by Wendy Mass, and When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, and she really loved The Saturdays and other books by EL Koningsburg at the same age. Not to derail the pp's thread too much, here are a couple of links to threads where I asked about books - one about books for an advanced 8 yo reader, but a lot of the suggestions are actually appropriate for an 11 year old. And pay attention anytime Farrar suggests a book! We have found her suggestions spot-on. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/536511-spunkyscrappy-girl-books-for-dd8-advanced-reader/ http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/529050-what-are-your-favorite-agatha-christie-or-similar-mysteries/ http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/533627-so-what-lit-for-7th-and-8th-grade-to-prepare-for-high-school-level-reading/ http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/526045-dd11-wants-more-mature-books/
