Tap Posted September 24, 2014 Share Posted September 24, 2014 I have a 2013 Outback CVT that has a couple things that I don't like. It makes a weird noise sometimes, and I have been told it is the Pzev causing the sound. It has a rattle wheneven the engine is accelerating quickly (like when leaving a stop sign) and the AC is running. It only happens when the AC is running, no other times. It also burns through about a quart of oil every 3,000 miles or so. Very Annoying for a new car! I am looking at the 2015 Outback due to the increase of features that I would really, really like to have. That car will be my car for the next 5-10 years, so I want it to be a good one! Do you know if all the Pzev engines make odd noises? And do you know if the newer 2015s are burning oil? We are thinking about buying from out of state to avoid the Pzev if it makes a difference. Lady Marmalade Posted September 24, 2014 Share Posted September 24, 2014 I am not a mechanic (nor do I play one on TV) but my Dad has almost always had a Subaru in his possession. He loves their reliability- and after having one, you learn the "Subaru quirks" and know how to deal with future vehicles. One thing that I know they are notorious for is their exhaust system going wonky. Multiple Subarus, and every single one had to have things done to the exhaust- multiple times. But he became familiar with their sounds so knew with subsequent vehicles. So that may be something to look into for figuring out the problem with your current car. MEmama Posted September 24, 2014 Share Posted September 24, 2014 Yeah, if you need to take it in, I'd only trust a Subaru expert. Subarus are awesome, but they have their quirks. My 1998 Forester makes clicking sounds when I use the A/C, which I've been told is normal for its year and model. It burns through quite a bit of oil, too, but it runs great. With 150,000 miles on it, I really really hope to have it another 5 years or more. I love it more than any new car we've looked at out there. Sorry that didn't help. I just visited Denver and rented an Imprezza with Pzev and it DID do most of those things. I don't know if this helps but it seems there is something going on. It sounds like it was a piston issue that they think they fixed in the cars manufactured after May 2013. I bought mine in April, so I know it was manufactured way before the modification was made.
