hornblower
If you're asked to summarize an article, how much do you have to keep saying "Smith says, Smith argues. Smith concludes, Smith states" ... It seems like every para my child is writing starts with one of those phrases and it sounds awkward to me but I can't figure out how to edit it. Or are these assignments just like this?
Kendall
I don't know what to tell you other than to encourage the use of synonyms, such as author. But here is a link to some examples of summaries of articles by college students. I haven't read them... http://courses.washington.edu/psy209/SummarySamples03.htm
hornblower
thx Kendall ! bumping up with another question - if there's only one Reference (the article you're summarizing) do you call the section References or Reference ? Oh & found some great tips on structuring these summaries if anyone needs to brush up on it. I went through 6 yrs of uni & never did them but apparently it's a thing now....http://academics.smcvt.edu/cbauer-ramazani/AEP/EN104/summary.htm - this has excellent examples of frames to use http://www.ufv.ca/media/assets/writing-centre/handouts/Summarizing-A-Scholarly-Journal-Article-2009.pdf
elegantlion
We had to do that last year in my research class. The professor wanted the cite/author as subject followed by verbs like states, explains, describes, notes, etc.it took some creativity to not sound redundant. Thanks for the links!
