Stirsmommy
I was wondering this last night and while I was researching I found a sight that said to go ahead and start with one because it dealt with things not covered in the others. So I am thinking we will start with one and see how it goes. Melissa
nmoira
You need to start with the first book because the terminology and concepts are cumulative.
Sunshine State Sue
There is an assesment book, but it costs $28.95: http://epsbooks.com/dynamic/catalog/book.asp?subject=63S&subjectdesc=Phonics+%26+Word+Study&series=1825M&seriesdesc=Megawords&seriesParent=1825M&seriesparentdescription=&altIsbn=1841&altIsbndesc=Megawords+Assessment I foolishly bought it and quickly realized that I needed extra training for it to be truly useful. For instance, I would have to be able to categorize the different ways he would misprounce a word he read. Ds was in 5th grade, so I just started at the beginning. It took us 2 months to complete Megawords 1, 2 ½ months to complete Megawords 2, and 3 months to complete Megawords 3. We generally did 4-5pages a week. HTH! HollyDay
There is an assessment in the TM. I found it very helpful and easy to do. You do need to start with book one. Lists 1-8 are in book 1 and the lists progress in each additional book.

AngieW in Texas
I recommend starting with book 1. My 7th grader started it near the end of 5th grade. I had her doing 1 page/day until she got to book 3. Now she's in book 4 doing just 3 pages/week.
