mom@shiloh
My ds has been learning the slope intercept formula for several weeks now in MUS Algebra I. He's just not getting it. We review and review and I think he has it, but he doesn't. Shall we move on, or should I find another way to teach this?
Jen in NY
Does this video (or any of the others from Chapter 8) help? http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Videos/external.php?video_id=
Julie of KY
If you can move on without needing this for future problems, then I'd do so. I'd also find another source and start teaching it from the beginning again after awhile. Sometimes just taking some time off for the concept to gel is helpful or a different approach. klmama
Take a look at the Khan Academy videos on slope intercept form to see if they might be helpful. http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/linear-equations-and-inequalitie/graphing-slope-intercept/v/graphing-a-line-in-slope-intercept-form
Mom22ns
I used to be in the MUS yahoo group and this was such a common issue!! Ds got stuck there too. Use a different book or teaching source to get through it. MUS's presentation of the concept is horribly confusing. He tries to break it down to make it easier, but it really just makes it confusing. Don't skip the concept, but teach it from another source, then skip it in the MUS book and move on.
mom@shiloh
It will be a huge relief to my ds that this is a more common problem. He's dyslexic, but I don't know how much that is contributing to this block. I don't think it helped that we took two weeks off for Christmas right in the middle of it either. Thanks for the tips and the encouragement!
