Farrar
I started to go look, but then I thought, perhaps someone has seen something already. Any good graphic explainers or short video explainers about what's a polar vortex that would be kid accessible? Also, I've seen people saying that they're going to do the throwing boiling water thing. But is it really cold enough? How cold does it need to be? I mean, that's like, Siberia cold. Only me
It worked here today and our air temp was about minus 15 and windchill around 40 below at the time.
Paige
The boiling water and frozen bubbles worked at our house. The kids thought it was amazing. It is cold here- not Wisconsin cold- but our temps were between -5-0.
trulycrabby
I think the magic numbers are somewhere around 200F for the water and -25F air temperature. http://www.geologyinmotion.com/2011/01/boiling-water-turns-to-snow.html
I've got a lot of facebook posts about people burning themselves with the frozen water trick, when not all of the water freezes. Don't throw it straight up or into the wind.
jelbe5
It was -13 here today. We threw a boiling cup of water up in the air today. It vaporized and blew away. Unfortunately we could not find any bubbles!
TarynB
I saw this NASA explanation earlier today and it seems pretty straightforward & kid-accessible. Might be more if you poke around their website. dbmamaz
It'll only be about 12 in the morning - i guess thats not cold enough. sigh. THanks for asking, Farrar, no one on my fb seemed sure.
Farrar
Yeah, they're saying 9 here. I was dubious that would be cold enough as well. Anyone have any good videos about the vortex? I'd love to show the kids something.
Bug's Mom
We did the boiling water today at -20 and yesterday at -3. Worked great!
Farrar
I found a decent little explainer video on the CS Monitor's article about the vortex. It's from a local news clip from somewhere.
