Kathryn
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24486718 This is so weird. So, if someone killed him, could they be charged, since he's not legally alive?
Harriet Vane
Complete bureaucratic idiocy.
Jean in Newcastle
This has nothing to do with his physical state, as the judge noted. I think it has to do with the "rights" of being alive as well as the responsibilities. He doesn't have to pay back child support, but he doesn't have a right to his social security benefits either. I wonder if he has to pay taxes. . .
T'smom
I heard that on the radio earlier and wondered what they would do if he was on trial for robbing a bank or something. Would he be considered alive then? (I see why the judge ruled the way he did..... I'm glad his ex doesn't have to pay back the benefits she received.) Ravin
They could have ruled that he, and not she, is responsible for the ss arrears, and require him to pay for it in lieu of the child support for those years, absent evidence she knew he wasn't really dead. He apparently spent decades working under the table to avoid SS, so his lifetime benefit accumulation will also be severely limited. The court was too nice to him. NicAnn
What the what?? That is ridiculous. So can he not get a license, sign a lease, open a bank account?
ThatHomeschoolDad
Is there such a thing as a bucket list for one already dead? It would seem the sky is the limit. The dead can't break laws, so go ahead and drive that Bimmer through the showroom window on your way to cash a million dollar fake check. It's like the movie Groundhog Day IRL. Ravin
It reminds me of the movie Double Jeopardy, where a woman served a sentence for murder after her ex frames her for it and fakes his own death. She then goes and kills him for real, and since she's already served a sentence for murdering him, does so with impunity because you can't be tried and convicted twice for the same crime.
