Cryptography

Recommended Posts

As part of our math classes, we always do some extension or "fun" math.  This year it is going to be cryptography.  I've just started planning our lessons.  I'm planning to use Top Secret: A Handbook of Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing  from Paul B. Janeczko as our "spine," with additional resources from Khan Academy, possibly the Crypto Club, and other resources such as a video about the Navajo Windtalkers.

But the one supplemental resource that I especially wanted to mention here because I thought it might be of interest to others is The Book of Codes: Understanding the World of Hidden Messages.  It is an incredible encyclopedia of codes and ciphers throughout history, across cultures, and through various technologies. If anyone has a kid who is interested in codes, I highly recommend this book!
