Murphy101
A few of my kids are really going through a phase of loving their recorders. They've learned a few notes with some free iPad apps, but want to learn more. Any free or inexpensive suggestions?
...................
I've heard that if you pay a merely 20 bucks you can actually get recorders that have a really lovely sound, and I also heard a while ago that some people actually play very beautiful, complicated music with the recorder. So cool! Anyway, Love to Learn.net has a few beginning recorder books which she recommends.
Cmm
Not free, but the New Nine Note Recorder Method book is excellent. I think Amazon.com carries it, and we ordered ours from Sonlight.
Amy Jo
I really like the Nine Note Method as well.

Sally Day
We use Recorder from the Beginning by John Pitts. It's a classic (here in the UK at least) and very easy to follow. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Recorder-Beginning-Pupils-Bk-1/dp/0711950792
Lori D.
Another vote for Penny Gardner's Nine Note Recorder Method. We really enjoyed this one because you can play a tune right from the start, plus many songs are written as duets which makes it super fun to play together! We didn't have this one, but it looks like a very fun holiday book to have once you've learned the notes: Penny Gardner's Easy Christmas Duets: A Nine Note Recorder Book. Also, the Hands On Recorder book was very nice for additional tunes once we learned from Penny Gardner's book. And, esp. if you're going to do duets, DO invest in nicer recorders so the tones blend well. Happy music making! Warmly, Lori D.

Carol in Cal.
Yamaha makes very good plastic recorders that don't sound like plastic and are reasonably priced. Best beginner recorder book ever: http://www.amazon.com/Enjoy-Your-Recorder-Instruction-C-Soprano/dp/B000CS34RG/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1377215824&sr=8-8&keywords=trapp+family It starts easily but takes you much further than any other I have seen.
