kbpaulie
Oldest is getting ready to start Primary Mathematics 6 Standards Ed. this year. Just quickly flipped through the book. Haven't studied it yet. Did your kiddos use a calculator for any of this yet? Or not yet? We're planning on going w/ NEM for next year. When do they use a calculator and for what? Thinking ahead and wondering.
Arcadia
My boys did not use the calculator for SM 6 standard edition. They are now using AoPS prealgebra and did not need to use the calculator either. I'll let my boys use a calculator for trigonometry functions because I don't think trigonometry tables will be supplied in exams. They do know how to use a scientific calculator, I just don't allow the use for school work.
Crimson Wife
DM 7 has a few sections designed for calculator use. Depending on the specific problem, I either played "mean mom" and made DD do it by hand, or totally skipped it. I do not plan on allowing calculator use in regular schoolwork until algebra 2. Candid
We did NEM all the way through. There are a very few marked exercises for using a calculator but that is it.
jennynd
I think I let DS do some of the "average" question with calculator in SM6. there are like 20 numbers to add. It just seem waste of time. Other than that, we are in NEM 2 and did not use calculator other than that
daijobu
I taught dd to use an RPN calculator about a year ago because some MathCounts rounds assume the use of a calculator. This was about a year ago when in the midst of AOPS pre algebra, but not necessary for the textbook.
Dmmetler
I got DD one before the EXPLORE last year-she'd gone through SM 5B without using it, and hadn't used it for the parts of SM 6 CWP we'd done, either. She came out of the test saying that she forgot she had it and didn't use it (and based on the scores, didn't need it).
Dana
I let my son use one for a number of word problems in IP and CWP. On the problems where I allow the calculator, I'm very particular about work being shown very clearly.
