What do you like to use to teach a student typing (3rd grader)?

She'll be entering 3rd grade. She's coordinated and eager to learn. What's a good typing/word processing program?

We tried a few, but my DS liked Dance Mat typing the most. It is free and fun for most kids.

 

After that, he just practiced by typing his writing assignments until he built up his speed and accuracy. Worked great here!

I used the book Keyboarding Skills by Diana Hanbury King. It was in the library.

DS10 was very frustrated with typing until he started Dance Mat. We are going to move into another program after he is more comfortable, but for now he really enjoys Dance Mat.

I'm following the progression outlined in this blog post, starting with Dance Mat, moving to Keybr, and then typing games.

 

Right now we are still in the Dance Mat phase. Each level in Dance Mat has three or four sublessons. She is doing each sublesson for a week before moving on to a new one. It should take us a few months to complete Dance Mat at that pace, then we will move on.
