My son's OT did a portion of a Vision Exam with my son Now I have ??'s

Recommended Posts

My Asperger son 11 has been taking a break from OT for the winter. We live an hour from the threapy so we take a few months off each year. Tuesday he had his first session for the new year. Since my son had met all of his previous goals aside from penmanship issues we discussed vision issues that he's been having. His OT gave him a portion of a new test for vision that she has... called Test of Visual Perceptual Skills 3. The test covers: Vision Perception, Visual Discrimmination, Visual Memory, Visual Sequential Memory, Visual Spatial Relations, Visual Spatial Orientation, Visual Form Constancy, Visual Closure, and Visual Figure Ground. She did three sections Tuesday: Visual Discrimmination, Visual Memory and Visual Spatial Relations. He scored 4yrs, 6-6yrs, and 9-3yrs respectively.

Back in November we took our son to see a vision specialist who suggested we wait until spring to work on any issues. Obviously there are some vision issues if our OT test is showing such low numbers. I was wondering what I should expect from the VT appointment? What kinds of questions should I ask?

Hopefully OhElizabeth and other VT graduates will have time to answer your VT questions.

My VT experience seems to be atypical as the developmental optometrist only uses VT software and there is no charge for follow-up visits. DD is almost done with the HTS (Home Therapy System), so the optometrist sold us the computerized perceptual therapy (PTS II iNet).

May I ask what the OT charged for doing the TVPS-3? I am wondering if it is worth doing it to see if DD has improved with VT software. At the next appointment, I plan to ask the optometrist to measure DD's near point of convergence (NPC), & positive fusional vergence at near (PFV) to see if the HTS improved her convergence insufficiency.

His OT gave him a portion of a new test for vision that she has... called Test of Visual Perceptual Skills 3.

Nita, the TVPS-3 isn't a test of vision, but rather a test of how the brain processes visual and spatial information.

Though this highlights the 2 sides of correcting vision.

Where the brain develops a way to process vision, to suit what it is recieving from the eyes.

So that when vision difficulties are corrected, the brain needs to develop a new way to process vision, to suit what how the eyes now see.

So that in regard to questions to ask at the VT appointment?

You could ask how his current vision issues would effect each of these sub-tests?

Which you could then use as a guide to work on, as he undertakes VT.

So that as his vision improves, his brain learns how to process this new way of seeing.

My son does not have the same issues, but he has visual issues identified from OT. They recommended I take him to be evaluated by a developmental optometrist. Then based on what he said, he saw the same issues but nothing more or to explain them as something only he could treat. He said he could offer treatment or the OT could offer treatment.

For him it seems OT is the best choice, but it was worth going to the COVD evaluation. If he does not progress with tracking with OT then I can take him to VT later. However from talking to them -- they both say they can treat it and both think the other person can treat it too. But my son has other things tied in that seem to be more of OT things.

I don't really understand it, but I would say, just bc something says "vision" doesn't mean it can't be treated in OT and must be treated in VT. I got info talking on the phone and with the therapists.

They have all been helpful.
