busymama7
I am considering getting the supplies for this for my daughter,14, who loves to do nails. I thought it would be different and fun. Does anyone have opinions positive or negative about gel polish?
LaxMom
From what I have read (and I have no first hand experience so take it for what it's worth), the kits that do not require a curing light are essentially super glue. Reviewers who have used the light cure or had gel coats done professionally seem to universally hate it.
KatieJ
Hmm..I really liked the gel manicures I have had done at salons. I only do it for special occasions like a vacation or a wedding. Regular polish does not stay on my nails longer than a couple of days and gel manicures last me almost 2 weeks. The only drawback is that it used to be you had to have it removed at a salon as well, but eventually I figured out I could just peel it off.
busymama7
Thanks. I didn't realize there was some that didn't need to be cured. I was planning to get the light for her too. Hmmm. Decisions!
Pippen
You may want to read up on the potential health concerns associated with gel polish first: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/06/gel-manicures-can-cause-cancer_n_1324519.html http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/consumer&id=7578184
Forget-Me-Not
I've tried it, and it really doesn't chip. The problem is that after the two weeks they claim it lasts, your nails have grown and it looks awful at the cuticles. I had mine done in a salon with lights and it was a huge process to have it removed--involving soaking my fingertips in pure acetone and having the nail polish literally scraped off. I could see how perpetual use would really trash my fingernails, so I haven't done it since.
busymama7
Thanks for the links. That does concern me. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a largish gift for someone who loves to do nails? It can be a bunch of little stuff together but something more than just a bunch of polish. Unicorn.
What about a really good manicure kit? And we saw nail polish pens at Walgreens, that you can use to draw fine line designs on the nails. My 14 yo really wants those.
LizzyBee
A friend of mine got gel nail polish a couple of times and then her nails split and peeled. I've read that this is a common occurrence and manicure places are beginning to get rid of gel polish.
