Artists - Which supplies are your favorites?

Recommended Posts

I'm buying some artist quality (or close) art supplies for 9 yo DD for Christmas. She is a wonderful artist and totally ready for the Good Stuff. :D

She already has tons of regular Crayola crayons, TONS of colored pencils that never get used. Though better quality pencils might inspire her. Who knows. She also has metallic and traditional colored tempera paints, low-end paint brushes, an acrylics set (she's running out of these), beeswax crayons (they're pretty thick, would love to find thinner "crayola-size" beeswax crayons). Also, we have a smattering of Crayola markers, chalk pastels, oil pastels and probably other stuff I'm forgetting. I do NOT like Crayola markers, because they run out of ink too quickly and the colors aren't rich enough.

I was thinking of a nice set of drawing pencils, more acrylics, some canvas paper, the perfect black illustrating marker and.... I'm not sure what else. I want this box literally overflowing with creative, artistic goodness.

Please help me spoil my DD :D I need ideas for products, brands, anything at all. Thank you :)

First, http://www.dickblick.com/ -- It's paradise!! The prices are great and the reviews, I've found, have been very accurate.

Watercolor pencils would be fun for that age. Be sure to get decent paper, though. The cheapo paper shreds pretty easily when wet, which is discouraging. You want to be able to use paper towel and blot it up or even a stiff bristle paint brush to scrub it off sometimes. That won't work on cheap paper.

If she liked acrylics and has used them up, I would get her more. Get her some decent brushes and again, good paper.

My kids also love good quality watercolor pencils. We have prismacolor right now and they are fantastic. We got them from dickblick. We use the niji waterbrushes with the pencils. We splurged on some good copic markers as well and use them to mimic the brush strokes of famous painters. At around 8 bucks a pen they are under lock and key, though. My kids love good sketch pencils of different grades, acrylic paints, different size and shape paintbrushes, and good quality watercolors. We also have lots of good paper, decent scissors, and different types of adhesives. They love pastels as well. We use the dickblick brand for oil and chalk pastels.

I have noticed that my kids will leave dozens of colors of ho-hum crayons, pens, etc alone and will use a few of the "good stuff" items for hours at a time. They are just easier to use and give a better quality result. The first time you lay down color with a really well pigmented and smooth colored pencil, you just can't go back. :D

These are my daughter's favorite sketchbooks:http://www.dickblick.com/products/canson-xl-mix-media-pads-and-sheets/ Good, thick sheets, nicely bound, and it can lay flat.

These are pens she loves. (she draws a lot of anime-type stuff) http://www.dickblick.com/products/sakura-pigma-sensei-manga-drawing-set/?clickTracking=true

I love Prismacolor colored pencils and markers.

These are pretty much the only pencils I use for drawing: http://www.dickblick.com/products/sanford-design-drawing-pencils/

Also, make sure she has both kneaded erasers and plastic/vinyl erasers. They work a bit differently and both come in handy :)

I just wanted to chime in for Dick Blick as well. And be sure to check out their "store brand" options when available. They are often great. The reviews are online but there are also brick and mortar stores some places if you prefer to see and touch before buying.

So, I've been browsing Dick Blick and... wow. I think I'm in love :)

I'm stumped on which markers to get her. It looks like you get what you pay for and I'd pay dearly for some really good markers. Not sure we can afford excellent quality markers AND other supplies, which is disappointing. So, I think I need to shift my sights down from "artist quality" to "very good quality for a 9 yo, but not $8 per pen."

If it helps at all, my olders have been seriously into art since they were really young, and I just bought them both a set of the Coptic markers this year. So don't feel bad about waiting awhile (10 years here ;)) on those.

In the meantime, the Prismacolor markers are also great. They are a HUGE step up from "kiddie" markers. I buy ours at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon, and I also get a lot of stuff through Dick Blick when I get an email sale announcement.

Paper makes a gigantic difference in everything, as well, so be sure to stock up!

(Sorry for any weird icons at the top---I'm on my iPad...)

My DD8 has a few favorites that include...

Awonderful 72 piece set of Copic markers that are fantastic!

Huge canvases are always a big hit. The bigger the better (shop local so you can avoid shipping on canvases that are larger than 48").

Liquitex acrylic paints are always consistent. (Maybe a one-stoke instruction book would be fun too).

Art is such a broad subject that there are unlimited possibilities. Enjoy, and just have fun with it!
