Dog people: Limber Tail Syndrome?

Recommended Posts

So, my 3 yo golden Retriever mix has all of a sudden got this limp tail! It is the most pathetic thing ever. This morning, she seemed fine - this afternoon, it was hanging strangely. From my googling (Yeah, yeah, I know!) it really looks like she may have just sprained it.

Anyone have experience with this? I don't have to take her to the vet, from what I'm reading. Yes? No?

She's better this morning! Not 100%, but better than last night.

The only thing that I can think of: the younger 4 kids and I went out of town for the weekend (TH-Sun); that left her here mostly by herself while dh & dd worked, so lots of inactivity. Then, Sunday night when we got home, she was like a crazy dog! She ran and ran and RAN all over the place for a couple of hours. So I'm thinking maybe the inactivity followed by over-exuberance might have done it.

So glad she's better! Thanks for the encouragement.

Yes! My sister's dog had it when we went camping this summer. He was so excited to get there and swim in the pond that he over-wagged and pulled the muscles in his tail.

He wouldn't sit down or lay down all night, so they took him to a vet. She prescribed some sort of medication but I couldn't tell you what. He was totally fine in a day or two.

  • 1 year later...

Day two of limber tail.  Bear is doing much better.  He is able to sit for short periods and can lift his tail to do his business.  He really tried to wag when one of his favorite people stopped in, but, other than that, we are keeping him quiet.  I am sure he will be better in a couple of days.  He is learning to milk this for treats from my daughter.
