kbpaulie
Our 15 year old leather couch (please, no animal rights defenders) is cracking. Anyone know how to repair this or recommend a product?
RoughCollie
There is not a way to restore the leather. To prevent it from happening, you have to clean the leather to remove oil and dirt every six months minimum. http://www.myfurnitureforum.com/showthread.php?2616-Clean-Clean-Clean-that-leather&highlight=cracked+leather
Catwoman
You might be able to use a conditioner on the leather to prevent things from getting worse, but realistically, it's probably time to replace the couch. Once the leather dries out and cracks, there's not much you can do. I'm surprised it cracked. We have had leather furniture for years and it hasn't cracked at all. (We don't take any special care of it, either.) Is your couch in direct sunlight for several hours a day, or do you live in a very hot, dry climate? Jpoy85
we have a well loved leather couch from my uncle and any time the dogs are on the couch, there are cracks. I need a slipcover.
DawnM
:iagree: We have a leather set we purchased back in 1999 and we have conditioned it at least once per year. We try to clean and condition it every 6 months, but we have forgotten a few times. The leather is still in excellent condition, soft and no rips or tears. We had a sofa and recliner. We wanted another recliner and since it is an older set and GREEN, La-z-boy told us we were "last century!" and needed to get new furniture. Well, what do you know, 6 months later someone put the EXACT La-Z-boy recliner in green leather on Craigslist! We bought it and now have a sofa and 2 recliners! The reason I am telling the above is it to say that the couple we purchased the 2nd recliner from DID NOT condition their chair. We could tell. The leather was stiffer and some parts of the arm looked creased and possibly would have cracked if we hadn't brought it home and started with a good conditioning and we did it every 3 months on that one for a while. Now both chairs are nice and soft leather and I think we saved it from cracking. We have had that CL one for 3 or 4 years now. However he also told his preferred cleaning method is a damp rag. If soap is needed, use a mild soap (like a bar of Ivory soap) in a small amount mixed up in a small bowl. Small amounts are important...do not overdo it. What is important is to get all the soap residue off the hide to prevent it from drying out the leather. http://www.myfurnitureforum.com/showthread.php?161-H-amp-M-Cleaning-Regimen&highlight=clean+leather
Amy in NH
I use Meguiar's One Step Leather Care on our dark brown leather living room furniture. I think I get it at Walmart. I try to do it once per year. We can always see a huge difference after it's been done. I'd give it a try and see if you can't bring it back...
