Math Word Problem of the Day

Recommended Posts

I am officially starting the Math Problem of the Day Thread.

Word Problem will be posted (middle school level or up) once per day w/ an answer given the next day (or when I can get on).

Varied solutions are helpful..as it always amazes me to see how each student or parent tackles a problem. We hope you have fun learning and welcome the teaching that will come to us from this post.

DRT related - An easy one today!

Denver is about 1,020 miles from Chicago. The train from Chicago to Denver travels at an average speed of 77 miles per hour. If the train travels directly without any stops, how far will it have traveled after 7 hours and 25 minutes?

Good Luck! :D

i did it in my head approximately and got 7x70 + 7x7 + (5/12)77 ≈ 539 + (5/12)x72 + (5/12)x5 = 571 + 1/12 = 571.083333....

actually i originally got ≈ 570 (approximating 25/12 as 1, oddly), but in writing down the answer here i was able to make it more precise.

i may still be wrong.

That's what I got when I didn't round the decimal (5/12 = .4166666...) to two places.

You are correct! 571.1 was the answer for the last problem...

Here is the problem for today:

Each month, Kofi's cheese shop sells 68lbs of cheddar cheese and 36lbs of swiss cheese.

He buys the cheddar in 10lb blocks for 96.50 each

He buys the swiss in 3lb rounds for 37.00 each

He then divides the cheese into smaller 4oz packages, which he sells for 4.50 each.

He discards unsold cheese at the end of each month.

How much profit does he make on cheddar cheese each year?

Good Luck!!!

I got $6,582 once I noticed the smaller packages were oz. not lb.

I ignore all the information about swiss cheese.

cost of cheddar cheese in a year = 7 x $96.50 x 12 = $8,106

sale of cheddar cheese in a year = 68 x (16/4) x $4.50 x 12 = $14,688

profit in a year = $14,688 - $8,106 = $6,582
