justLisa
He is a big poker player, I am not. But I love being outdoors and just roaming around. WE like vacations where we can go our own ways and spend time doing a couple activities and dinner. Not really into touristy type stuff. I have never been, DH has several years ago. In looking up online it is overwhelming! So there is N Lake Tahoe, and S lake Tahoe. Any suggestions? Somewhere with good poker and I am good just roaming around outside and finding a spot to read. BeachGirl
All of the major casinos are in South Lake Tahoe. There is a nice beach nearby where you can relax and read. The water will be very cold even in August but it is certainly refreshing. Enjoy your stay.
justLisa
Oh good to know! So I will for sure look at South. That certainly helps.
Liz CA
The "Tahoe Queen" (a boat) cruises around every couple of hours and depending on which cruise you choose, you can kill an hour or two. The one I was on had an interesting program on the way back. They had a DVD running about the items found on the bottom of Lake Tahoe. Stuff like that always mystifies me (it's okay, no dead bodies). You can also rent a horse drawn carriage and see South Lake Tahoe. If you are a walker, you can cross over into the CA side from the Nevada side and there area no more casinos but fun little bookstores. All my suggestions are based on a stay in South Lake Tahoe. And the best thing of all IMHO: Cooler Temps.
marbel
It's been several years since my last visit, but there are also casinos at North Shore and that area is more rustic and less built-up than South. But both areas are gorgeous. I remember the Tahoe Queen tour as worth the time and $$. Have a wonderful time! That is one of the few areas of California I miss. Photo Ninja
South Lake Tahoe is probably where you would want to stay. The largest casinos are there for your dh and there is a lot for you to do. You can ride the gondola up the mountain at Heavenly. The view is great. You can spend time there reading, then give your eyes a rest with a gorgeous view. Tahoe Queen - the ride on the lake is pretty and relaxing. Take a dinner or brunch cruise. Go to Emerald Bay - beautiful. Walk. There are walking paths all over South Lake and you can walk or bike for miles. Hike - lots of hiking trails at all levels Drive around the lake. Really. It's pretty. Rent a kayak and get out on the lake. Go to Squaw Valley and ride the tram to the top. Shop, eat, relax, skate, golf, frisbee gold, swim. There is a lot to do. See if they have any full moon hikes going on. Those are fun if there is a full moon. There is plenty for you to do in South Lake Tahoe. The problem is trying to fit it all in and still have a relaxing time.
deacongirl
Lucky you! I am very biased towards the North Shore. (not a casino fan, and I think it is way prettier.) Places worth seeing: Squaw Valley, Truckee, Sand Harbor (the most gorgeous beach on the lake in my strong opinion!) Tahoe City, rafting down the Truckee River (well rafting is prob. stretching it--leisurely floating) and having lunch at the River Ranch, North Star at Tahoe...so much to see and do, lots of wonderful restaurants, friendly people.
