bry's-gal
I'm looking for a spelling program for my first grader. I'm wanting something that focuses on the important spelling rules- not just a list of words. What would you recommend?
isitnaptime
We started with All About Spelling level one at the beginning of first grade and we are now halfway into level 2. She has learned many rules she actually remembers, and she enjoys it.
maizeydaizey
We use Horizon for both spelling (weekly list work and activities) and Reading/Phonics (the rules and application of such). They work great together!!! To see how much my daughter (1st grade) has grown in spelling, reading and writing is amazing! I am thrilled with their program :001_smile:
jmc1970
I second AAS. We are on L2 also now. Not just word family lists, but good spelling rules that should help them with any words that apply to that rule.
KristenR
I agree All About Spelling!!! If you want to see what the program looks like in action you can see my blog posts on it here.
lindsrae
I love Phonics Road. It is not just spelling, however...it is integrated language arts :)

ScoutTN
We like AAS. We began this year on level 1 and are almost done with 2 now. I like the rules and the reinforcement of phonics. Not inexpensive, but also non-consumable.
Mommee & Baba
Another vote for AAS! I started my 1st grader on level 1 and she is ending this year completing level 2! Edited April 10, 2012 by mamaofblessings
nansk
We use Spell To Write And Read, which is based on the Spalding method (with spelling rules and Orton-Gillingham phonograms). Other programs I have are: Spalding (Writing Road To Reading), How To Teach Spelling, and Spelling Plus.
SnMomof7
I'm another big AAS fan - it is a great OG based program, but scripted (YAY!) and pre-planned so you just open and go. We are almost done level 2. What I love the MOST about it is that my daughter actually applies the spelling concepts she has learned to rules that we haven't studied together yet - she applies them forward to more complicated words too, and that is the best sign that it's working to me!
