Help! 8th grader doing Modern History

Recommended Posts

We just finished MOH 3 and since 4 is not out yet I had her start SOTW 4 beefed up. SHE.HATES.IT. Its way to babyish for her. I get that. I had a feeling this was going to be a problem from the beginning so I really worked on beefing it up. The beefed up areas she likes but HATES SOTW as her spine. Problem is i need something that does not cost an arm and a leg. What other options are there for Modern history that is not a huge package deal thing? Are there any other books that have modern history in a single book that I can add books to on certain topics to go in depth on?

k12's Modern History text is great--very readable, with excerpts from literature from time to time. I LOVE it. You could gloss over some of the more indepth parts to get all the way thru, but it's not a huge book.

TOG uses The Complete Idiot's Guide to The 20th Century (or, "to 20th Cent Hist" I'm not sure of exact title). I got it out of the library and read thru it--very good, very readable. You can skip the first few chapters, which summarize the Early Mod period.

Wow! I came back to ask another question about this and found I have a bunch of suggestions! Thank you so much. I will check them all out and see what dd thinks :D

What I was going to ask is if there is anything like hippocampus that has modern history. It appears that just has American History and Government topics.

Off to check out all the suggestions!! :001_smile:

World History: Medieval and Early Modern Times (McDougal Littell) = for grade 6-8. Secular. Don't know if it goes far enough into the time frame you want, and I can't seem to find any sample pages or table of content anywhere, BUT, you can get it used on Amazon for about $10, which includes shipping...

A Christian option: Bob Jones World History, grade 7, covers Dark Ages to 20th Century. See table of contents and sample pages at the first link. Buy it used for about $4 (includes shipping!) at this link.
