Tohru
I'm freaked out because we have a 2 week old newborn. Does anyone know what a barking cough would be a symptom of? Whooping cough? My friend came over yesterday with her 3yo ds to play with my 3yo dd. He seemed fine & healthy but his mom just called and said he woke up with a barking cough. He just started daycare last Tuesday. My friend is taking her son to see Dr. this morning, but I think I need to hear other speculations to calm my nerves now.
ChristusG
A barking cough is usually associated with croup. DD4 had it quite a few times as an older infant/young toddler.
catz
I'd also go with croup. I'd give everyone a bath, wipe down everything the kids played with and not sweat it too much.
LND1218
Yep - I agree with croup.

Twilight Woods
I have not read the other replies. A "barking" or "seal" bark is usually croup. DD #2 get's this in the fall/winter and when spring first arrives.
QuirkyKapers
First thought same as others -Croup.
Kertie
Croup. After reading an article about recent cases of whooping cough, I googled an audio of it. Weird, weird, scary sound that doesn't sound anything like barking.
ktgrok
Croup. Which is just a cold that settled in the voicebox area rather than the nose or chest. It is contagious, but only in the sense that the cold virus can be spread. That doesn't mean that those that catch it will get croup as well. They might just get a normal head cold. Mommyof4ks
:iagree: Croup. If your baby gets sick go to the doctor. My kids needed steroids when they were babies and got croup.
jelbe5
Probably croup. Whooping cough usually starts off as what sounds like a "normal" cough from a cold. Then it becomes progressively worse over time and it goes on for weeks and sometimes months.
