Anyone use Invitation to the Classics?

Recommended Posts

I have it and use it more as a reference book. It's very handy in that regard, but I don't think of it as a necessity. You could plan a Great Books reading from the book, but IMO you would need more that just the book to properly study most works.

:iagree: I have used it as a reference also. It can be useful background reading for a middle schooler.

I use it as a reference for myself. It gives you ideas to explore, lists of translations and versions of the books available, and biographies. It is written from a religious perspective (don't know which one) and includes a lot of information comparing the books to doctrine as they view it, if that matters to you. It also has sidebars and mini-chapters about the history and types of literature. It is nice to have as a reference.

I used it as a reference, too. And, I got to meet Os Guiness! He's amazing.

I used Omnibus, so there was plenty of introduction in that, but I still had ds read several of the chapters/book "reviews" in Invitation. It's too succinct to do much with, tho, imo.

Wow! So jealous!!

Like everyone else :D, we used it for reference. My dds read it after they write their context paper, but before they read the book.
