Absolutely for the higher levels. I didn't for 1A but had previously taught Right Start B & C so I didn't feel like it was worth the money. I found a copy of the 1B HIG at our virtual charter's lending library, so I did get that. It remains to be seen how much I'll actually use it when I go through 1B with my DS (he's currently working his way through RS B).

My ds has completed year 6 and dd is on year 5 and I have never used the HIG (I've never even seen a copy, so wouldn't even know what I'm missing :)). I have a strong math background, though, and felt quite comfortable w/o it.

:iagree:Same here. We are doing 4A now. I do have the HIGs, but almost never use them and I don't feel the need of them.

I've read the Liping Ma book and don't use the HIG. I have, however, taught math at PS before and feel pretty confident about teaching without a guide. I'm good at introducing the topics and using manipulatives and games to teach a concept before moving on to the textbook.
