Johanna
We will be embarking on our first family camping trip to Jellystone park in Md. Any random tips/ hints that a more experienced person could offer? We will be there two nights! Thanks :)
datgh
If you are tent camping have a couple of tarps and ropes along in case of rain to hang over your tent and picnic table. Nothing worse than a brief downpour getting everything wet. Matches, good dry newspaper and kindling so Dad is a hero because he got the fire going. A hatchet also comes in handy. Plenty of batteries for the camera. Well equipped first aid kit. We learned our lesson on this one last year when my son fell and really skinned up his knee and not a band aid, hydrogen peroxide or antibiotic ointment in sight. Have a wonderful time. Sophia
Flashlights for everyone. We thought the kids could share but noooo......they all have to have their own. Pack lots of games and books in case it rains and you spend more time than you planned in your camper. I like to pre-cook breakfast (french toast or egg burritos) so we can just warm it up and go (we have a microwave in our camper) cereal doesn't give them the protein and energy they need for active mornings. Have fun! We have lots of family memories built around our camping trips.
ma23peas
1. dryer lint in a ziplock bag for fire starters 2. Pack light...never need everything you pack 3. We rely on camping pads...worth every penny...borrow some from hardcore camping friends 4. Must put tarp under your tent to protect it....stake it! 5. Keep all your food in the car closed up or hang them in a bear bag from a tree a distance from camp... 6. Have good walking shoes...go hiking enjoy the sites! 7. We love packing a portable hammock...just a nice place to sit..not sure how primitive your site is, but 3 legged stools or something to sit on that is comfy is worth it. 8. small hand broom/dust pan to clean out the floor of your tent before you pack it up... 9. welcome mat type thing to place outside the opening of your tent to store your shoes to keep dirt out of your tent... Those are the best tips I have for a short trip! :)
AK_Mom4
Always bring your own stash of toilet paper. Kids eat more when camping than you might think. Simplify food preparation by doing as much as possible at home in advance. A towel is a really handy camping item. Not just in case of alien spaceships.... Lily_Grace
Our kit now includes: -a cheap dollar store welcome mat for outside the door. It helps keep the dirt out. -a handful of clothespins. -dark chocolate bars. So much better for grown-up s'mores. -a fleece blanket or two. We travel pretty light but these are what we've found most used. Oh, and reusable glow sticks. Last time there were 10 children in our camp - trying to keep track of them all after dark was made much easier by tying glow sticks on them. I don't bother packing games or entertainment but they get pretty creative when left to their own devices.

OrganicAnn
Since you are going to Jellystone, I would look out for bears. I've heard there is one that is 'smarter than the average bear' and loves to steal pic a nic baskets.

Alessandra
-- large garbage bags in case it is raining when you pack up. You probably don't want a muddy tent & tarp in your car, and, if it is pouring, you don't want to be stiffing your tent in a small bag. -- duct tape for emergency tent repair. -- tent seam sealer, if seams haven't been sealed. Use it when you arrive & air out tent before bed. -- rope to make a clothesline to air our sleeping bags. -- tent peg hammer. They are good for lifting out tent pegs as well as hammernig them in. -- extra tent pegs for double staking in case of wind. -- biodegradable soap for dishwashing. -- star map, nature guides
