Greatest Speeches/Orators of the 20th Century

Recommended Posts

In a discussion with the children the topic of great orators came up.

Who were the greatest orators of the 20th Century?

Rules of the game: we are not simply speaking about someone who can recite lines, but someone who both wrote and delivered speeches.

Our top two came up as Churchill and Reagan.

Of course there is always Herr H, who while a despicable character was a great speaker.

More ideas?

MLK, MacArthur, JFK???

Serious question : how do you know if someone wrote their own speeches? I know Reagan had help (Peggy Noonan, Etc)-- maybe I'll have to read http://www.whitehouseghostsbook.com/author.html

I remember a wit saying that Churchill spent days on his impromptu speeches. For passion and moving, I'd give Hitler and Churchill the prize. For me, although not standing in a crowd trying to make people emotionally charged, I'd rather listen to Murrow any day. His cadence makes me sit up, sit still and LISTEN.
