pqr
In a discussion with the children the topic of great orators came up. Who were the greatest orators of the 20th Century? Rules of the game: we are not simply speaking about someone who can recite lines, but someone who both wrote and delivered speeches. Our top two came up as Churchill and Reagan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsKDGM5KTBY Of course there is always Herr H, who while a despicable character was a great speaker. More ideas? MLK, MacArthur, JFK??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB9ZmBX_PJg

pqr
RFK Did he write his own speeches? I do not know. Then again I never found him particularily pleasant to listen to.
stripe
Serious question : how do you know if someone wrote their own speeches? I know Reagan had help (Peggy Noonan, Etc)-- maybe I'll have to read http://www.whitehouseghostsbook.com/author.html

I know Reagan had help (Peggy Noonan, Etc)-- maybe I'll have to read http://www.whitehouseghostsbook.com/author.html I remember a wit saying that Churchill spent days on his impromptu speeches. For passion and moving, I'd give Hitler and Churchill the prize. For me, although not standing in a crowd trying to make people emotionally charged, I'd rather listen to Murrow any day. His cadence makes me sit up, sit still and LISTEN.
