Melinda in VT
No suggestions for political thrillers. Have you read Arthur C. Clarke's novels? I read Childhood's End and 2001 for the first time recently, and enjoyed both. I highly recommend The Sparrow. Excellent science fiction novel. Alan Furst writes great historical thrillers set in WWII Europe. Good writing, great research.
mohini
Judging from your likes I would recommend Stanislaw Lem, The Cyberiad http://www.amazon.com/Cyberiad-Stanislaw-Lem/dp/0156027593/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304806579&sr=8-1 It's a book of sci-fi "fables" with a political undertone or Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon It's part sci fi, part political thriller, part philosophy. http://www.amazon.com/Cryptonomicon-Neal-Stephenson/dp/B004R96U4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304806761&sr=1-1'>http://www.amazon.com/Cryptonomicon-Neal-Stephenson/dp/B004R96U4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304806761&sr=1-1'>http://www.amazon.com/Cryptonomicon-Neal-Stephenson/dp/B004R96U4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304806761&sr=1-1'>http://www.amazon.com/Cryptonomicon-Neal-Stephenson/dp/B004R96U4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304806761&sr=1-1 or Diamond Age by the same author http://www.amazon.com/Cryptonomicon-Neal-Stephenson/dp/B004R96U4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304806761&sr=1-
J-rap
I'm reading the book, MISSING, by Thomas Hauser, right now. (When it was first published, it was called THE EXECUTION OF CHARLES HORMAN, so you might find it by either name.) It is the true story of a young man from NYC executed during the coup in Chile in 1973. The theory is that the U.S. government was behind his execution because he knew too much. (It was later made into a movie.)
Mrs Mungo
Not political, but I second The Sparrow. Have you read Good Omens? If you liked Lamb, then you'll probably love Good Omens.
tntgoodwin
I've read some Tom Clancy books. All the others mentioned I am not familiar with...thanks! I will look into these!
6packofun
I recommend the books of Erik Larson. Non-fiction that reads like incredible fiction! Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, Isaac's Storm, and coming later this month (I'm so excited!), In the Garden of the Beasts. I also loved Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith, which is a murder/political thriller, and it's sequel The Secret Speech.
bugs
I "third" The Sparrow. Then, if you liked/loved it, follow-up with Children of God (same author).

If you have not read Martin Cruz Smith, you might try Gorky Park. It is a wonderful series featuring the detective Arkady Renko. Cold War period. Another great thriller author is Nelson De Mille http://nelsondemille.net/content/index.asp I have read all of his novels and enjoyed each one.
