Science Through Art? Is there such a thing?

We spent the afternoon today drawing eyeballs, the optic nerve, the cornea etc...the boys loved it and (I think) learned a ton...is there a curriculum that is almost like a "Drawing through Science" where kids combine drawing with science?

Probably a long shot....

If you look on amazon, there are a number of artist's guides to human anatomy. I own Anatomy for the Artist.

For local zoology and botany, there are a number of books about keeping a nature journal. I own Keeping a Nature Journal. With this you can also use books about the birds and trees in your area.

Also, there are tons of science coloring books.

We do what you did. We draw whatever we are studying. I tell them that part of science is observing and you really have to observe to draw. I just took my 8th grade science girls bird watching. It was hard to draw a bird, they weren't still long enough and we weren't quiet long enough, but we tried, and the next week copied art pictures of birds that I had.

We also watched a PBS Audubon documentary and it said he killed 100 birds a day for his drawings. Ugh! but it kind of made everyone feel better that we didn't get a chance to draw the birds.

School Library Journal gave the Arty Facts books a fairly bad review. "Two unsuccessful attempts to pair art activities with specific branches of science. ...The continuing theme of the majority of the projects seems to be on cutting out various materials, pasting them to another material, cutting them out again, and mounting them to poster board. In most cases, several steps could be removed to make the project less time-consuming. Most of the crafts only vaguely relate to the accompanying text, and a few don't seem to be associated with it at all."

Thoughts?
