Tracy
We got dd a kit so she could see caterpillars turn into butterflies. I am trying to find out when it will likely be warm enough for them. But when I google "average daily low temperature," I just get a bunch of weather forecasts. Does anyone know where I can find this info? Leimarie
I'm in MD and don't expect to see caterpillars and butterflies until May/June. We collected and raised monarchs last year.
truebluexf
IIRC it has to be steadily above 55F.
Tracy
IIRC it has to be steadily above 55F. Yes, that is what the instructions say. But dd is dying to order them, and I want to find out when I can expect the average daily low temperature to be 55.
truebluexf
Oh! Go to weather.com, look up your zip, and there should be a link on there somewhere for avg temps by month. Also, city-data.org will have the info for you city. :)

GoVanGogh
Here is a nice chart of your weather: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/USIL0225 We found five swallowtail caterpillars on our fennel this morning in the garden. Love this time of year!
UmMusa
I ordered our kit back in the winter, and it was during a period of snow. The caterpillars made it here just fine, grew, morphed, and lived for a full three weeks as butterflies. I say go for it!

I have now been able to figure out that we can release them around mid-June. I am not sure I want to feed butterflies for over 2 months. Hmmmm . . . momto2Cs
My kids are eager to raise butterfies too, but we wouldn't be able to release them for a while, so in the meantime we'll be raising ladybugs and praying mantises.

momto2Cs
Did you buy them? Yes. I bought them off Amazon - the Praying Mantis pagoda and Ladybug Land. We're waiting on the eggs now. You can only get the Praying Mantis egg sacks from January to April. We're also watching a wolf spider and her egg sack in a little habitat my son set up (not bought), and we may go tadpole hunting soon. Oh, and my dh got the kids an ant farm. Lots of little critters around lately!

Miss Tick
I got the caterpillars too early last year and almost picked my budding hollyhock plants to death trying to keep them happy! Susan
