Sasharowan
Is there anything that is not to be missed in Ithaca, NY? Going for a weekend with ds9 for his birthday in June. Plan on doing some hiking, but my sis that we are staying with will be 5 months pg by then, so may need some lower key things. Sis is new to the area and BIL hasn't lived there in many years. Blossom'sGirl
We've driven up to the science museum in Ithaca. It is a smaller one, definitely low key, but my kids enjoyed it. I believe there is also a bird sanctuary near Cornell, but I haven't taken the kids there yet. If you don't mind an hour drive, the Corning Glass Museum is nice. Mrs_JWM
Robert Treman Park is beautiful. The hikes are easy; my then-4-y-o did the whole gorge trail with no problem. It'll be cold for swimming; it only averages 60 degree water temp. in July, but the swimming area is great, too. I love Treman; we camp there every year. http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/135/details.aspx There also a nice theater at the Treman Marina - different park, but same family! - called the Hangar Theater, and they're doing Alice in Wonderland in early June. http://www.hangartheatre.org/index.php?page=kiddstuff Ice cream at Purity - http://www.purityicecream.com/ B'fast or lunch at the Ithaca Bakery - http://www.ithacabakery.com/pages/home/home.php Walking around on the Commons - http://www.downtownithaca.com/ Ithaca has A LOT to offer! Have fun! :001_smile:
kiana
Buttermilk Falls state park, very easy hike but the falls are pretty. Cornell Plantations has hiking and some really neat plants. Triphammer Falls (can you tell I like falls?) is pretty too. Museum of the Earth (fossils) http://www.museumoftheearth.org/ Second the Bakery, it's fantastic. My mother's in that area so I've been around there quite a bit.
Catherine
The Moosewood Restaurant. It's awesome, even if you're not vegetarian.
Sasharowan
Thanks for the ideas. We are definitely going hiking to some of the falls. And the bakery looks yummy.
Jen in NY
We went down to the Museum of the Earth and there was an absolutely amazing giant tree house next to a gorge that my kids Loved. Maybe some Ithacans know where it is? :001_smile: ~J
Mrs_JWM
How have I missed a giant tree house?!! WOW!!! http://www.cayuganaturecenter.org/
Punchie
I liked the children's science museum. DH liked the Carl Sagan solar system markers. And we walked to a waterfall (named after a local chief who was thrown off if?). It was easy enough that DD did most of it on her own (2.5 at the time). redsquirrel
giant tree house would be the cayuga nature center. It is very near Treman park. http://www.cayuganaturecenter.org/ Don't forget just to hang out on the commons. It is the place to see and be seen. Umm... my mom likes to visit wegmans, lol. But, I would hardly call that a tourist attraction. Any of the gorges would be great. Sciencecenter has been mentioned... Museum of the earth is fun but IMO it is for older kids. My 10 year old loves it but my 6 year old can pass. And, ahem, I don't know you so I guess I should say that if you don't want to expose your kids to evolution or such then stay away from both places. The public library is wonderful. They have a really big children's dept and you can just hang out and read. It is right off the commons. Make sure you get a cup of Gimme! coffee, Yes, the farmer's market is very nice but only on the weekends. Well, in June the weekeday market might be up and running in Dewitt park. That is right off the commons and across from the building with the Moosewood. I think Moosewood has a great lunch but find it overpriced for dinner. It can be difficult if you have toddlers. The service is notorious for being SLOW
