lisabees
What would you get her for Christmas? Her mother said she's not sure what she's read so far, but she's really enjoying her ps Humanities course and is enjoying reading the classics. Thoughts on what she may not have read, yet might be perfect for a 17 year old girl?
Brenda in MA
or other Jane Austen books. The DVD series done by the BBC (with Colin Firth as Darcy) is really enjoyable too. Brenda

Brenda Thanks for the idea. I just checked her class's syllabus online and P&P was required reading. MIL just gave me that dvd for my birthday. ;)
Kareni
If you buy her a classic and your budget permits, you might pair the classic with Thomas C. Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor. Regards, Kareni

Hannah C.
Anything by Jane Austen. Also, Jane Eyre. I personally really enjoyed various books by Charles Dickens, so those would be another good bet.

lisabees
If your budget allows, how about a Kindle. . . virtually unlimited classics for free!! $139. . . Well, that's not in the budget, but I have been enjoying Austen again on my new Kindle! ;) Thanks for all of the ideas. It's too late for Amazon, but I'll head over to my friend's book store to see if she has any of your suggestions. Lisa, I did consider getting her the Beowulf audio book read by Seamus Heaney. It makes me swoon every time I hear it. :D Edited December 23, 2010 by lisabees
