KuniMom
My Junior Higher really is interested in the news, and wants to read an online news website like I do. The ones I go to are definitely not appropriate for her though...fox, cnn, etc. I would like to find one that is more age appropriate, but not geared towards young kids. Does anyone have any suggestions?
TechWife
I'm not quite sure what your objections to CNN and Fox news are for a middle school student. I really encourage you to rethink your position. By the end of middle school a student should be able to make her way around these sites easily, for research purposes if nothing else. Have you had her go through the sites with you? That might be a place to start. Also, discussion is paramount. Discuss current events as part of your regular life, not just as part of your school life. That way, you can talk about anything that interests her or anything you want to talk with her about. KuniMom
What are my objections? If you open up Fox, one of the headlines is "Hollywood Sext Objects." Another, "Why Sex in Space is a Bad Idea." For CNN, you get "Sesame Street Videos go Viral," about remakes of Sesame Street videos for an adult audience. Not something I want my 12 year old to read, nor do I want her to even have the opportunity to read it. Even if she tried her best to only read "news" items, not all the headlines would shout to her that they are inappropriate. I do not always have time to sit with her and go through news websites with her. Also, newspapers are not always an option for us because of where we live. And we do talk about current events. My question was if anybody know of a news website that had more appropriate content. So, does anybody else have any suggestions for websites? Chels~
I just found one more that looks really neat. This one shows a world map of current news represented by dots. You click on the dot and it reveals the headline. Geography and news all in one :). http://mapeas.com/

sadiegirl
I'm glad that to see this thread as I would like some sites for my teens to read as well. I feel exactly as you do about the content of some of the news sites and I actively read these sites but do not feel that some of the content is appropriate for "curious" teens. Honestly, I can't figure out why news sites have some of the fluff that they do as well as some of the questionable articles. We want our kids exposed to the news and current events but not the other right now.
